Nordic Food Waste Platform

The Nordic Food Waste Platform is a collaboration between authorities, ministries and food waste experts from the voluntary agreements across the Nordic countries.

The aim of the Nordic Food Waste Platform is to strengthen Nordic cooperation and mutual learning on food waste reduction.

The platform is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers, with the Swedish Food Agency serving as secretariat for the period 2025–2027.

Nordic Date Marking Coalition

One of the platform's current initiatives is the establishment of a Nordic Date Marking Coalition. The coalition brings together food business operators from across the Nordic region around a shared goal: helping consumers better understand date labels and use their senses to look, smell and taste  — and in doing so, reduce unnecessary food waste.

Today, a significant amount of food is discarded because consumers are uncertain about the difference between "best before" and "use by". Increased awareness of these markings has clear potential to reduce food waste.

By building a broad coalition of Nordic actors, the initiative creates strong conditions for lasting impact. The approach draws on experience from the Netherlands, where a similar coalition has already delivered positive results.
